Jul – 12 – Jacks Travels and New Air BNB

Jack here! Just firing off another infrequent news letter. Over the last month, I have been all over the place meaning I temporarily completely forgot about my email marketing efforts. I will include some photos, it’s not all about me –  it’s about The Boneline!

In late June I was in Queenstown making some visits with Andy of Palate Fine Wine, our sales partner in the lower South Island.  It was such hard work visiting amazing restaurants and cafe’s. It makes me proud to see our wine being so well received down south. I stayed at The Sherwood, a character-filled old Queenstown hotel that has an amazing restaurant with great staff making the whole thing effortless! Take a look at their beautiful garden where they grow fresh produce for the restaurant.

After that, I quickly boosted to Auckland where Willie and I attended an event with Caro’s doing tastings with trade and customers. I even managed to trick Audrey my sister into helping me at the event. She knows more than enough about what we do to convince the public!

Waipara Vineyard Retreat at The Boneline

Another key focus of mine over the last two months has been moving house along with preparing my house for Air BNB. And now it is finally up! So if you or anyone you know is looking to get away to our wine region then spread the good word. My friend and I built this house in 2019 for my wife and I. We have since bought a house with more bedrooms as we knew this would be great for Air BNB incorporating lots of ideas from places we have enjoyed staying at – with stunning views up our valley! I can’t link it here so search Waipara Vineyard Retreat.

Let’s Talk Cabernet Franc

I remember picking the Cabernet Franc in 2020. It was an amazing clear day as all of the pickers effortlessly cruised through the amphitheatre picking clean easily visible fruit. Here are some notes that support this footage below.

2020 was the earliest vintage here in our 32 years – a warm, dry September and cool October were followed by our hottest November on record, which set up very favourable conditions for flowering.  Summer started with dry, slightly warmer conditions than normal for both December and January, followed by a dry, much warmer than average February which put much of the east coast of New Zealand, including North Canterbury into drought. March brought a break in the heat and some much-needed rain that slowed the ripening of beautiful clean fruit. The first blocks were picked on the 16th of March. April, returned to dry weather, with above-average temperatures which was ideal for the bulk of our harvest.

The Boneline Amphitheatre Cabernet Franc 2020, Waipara

Youthful and complex, varietal and new. Aromas and flavours dark berries and black olive, a fine savoury, dried herb core, baking spices and toasty barrel spice layers of clove and vanilla. Fabulous texture on the palate with fine through firmish tannins and refreshing acid line. An excellent mouthfeel and flavour profile, varietal and fruity with violets and spices, well made and lengthy. Best drinking from 2023 through 2029.
